Detailed Itinerary
This is itinerary is only the preliminary draft.
The activities in Seattle both before and after the trek will be decided by the trip participants.
The sequence of activities and training at Camp Sheppard will be determined by the camp staff,
and will also be influenced by the weather during our week.
The specific flights will be decided later.
| Sat, Jul 24 | Fly from Houston to Seattle, Continental Air departing at 8:55a. Arrive in Seattle at 11:18p (Pacific time zone). Travel by bus from Seattle to the Camp Sheppard High Adventure Base, which is on the north slope of Mt. Rainier. Equipment check and initial instruction from camp staff. Stay in cabins at Camp Sheppard at 1,800 ft. |
| Sun, Jul 25 | Bus to trailhead at 3,820 ft, hike 4.2 miles to lunch site at 5,940 ft. Instructional session, then 1.0 mile hike to campsite. Camp at Meany Crest glacier camp at 7,600 ft. |
| Mon, Jul 26 | Breakfast, instructional session on glacier travel, ice axe use, etc. Hike 3 miles across Fryingpan Glacier, over Fryingpan Ridge, and to campsite. Camp at near Whitman Glacier at 8,580 ft. |
| Tue, Jul 27 | Breakfast, rope-up, cross Whitman Glacier to Tahoma Gap, descend to Ingraham Glacier, hike another 2 miles up to campsite. More instruction on climbing gear, techniques and rescues. Camp at Upper Ingraham Glacier at 10,800 ft. |

Head for the summit! Day packs only! Get up early (soon after midnight), rope-up, climb 1 mile and 3,600 ft to Mt. Rainier summit at 14,410 ft. Arrive by 8:00am. Group photo. Descend back to camp at Upper Ingraham Glacier, lunch, rest and free time. Camp for 2nd night at Upper Ingraham Glacier at 10,800 ft. |

Descend 1 mile to Camp Muir at 10,000 ft, lunch, and then descend additional 5 miles on Rainier's south slope to Paradise Ranger Station at 5,460 ft. Bus back to Camp Sheppard, and turn in gear. Stay in cabins at Camp Sheppard. |

If poor weather prohibits summit attempt on Wed, July 28, the group will stay in camp at Upper Ingraham Glacier, and attempt to climb to summit on Thu, July 29. In that case, the group would descend on Fri, July 30, and skip some of the final touring in Seattle. |
