Summer Adventures

Crew 55 sponsors at least one high-adventure trip each summer.  These trips are coordinated with Troop 55 but are usually at a level beyond the summer camp experiences sponsored by the Troop.  These trips are often two weeks in length and some involve foreign travel.

Summer of 2010
In July 2010, Crew 55 sponsored two adventure programs based at Camp Parsons, which is a scout camp near the Olympic Mountains, west of Seattle, Washington.

The older group climbed Mt. Adams, whose summit is at 12,276 ft and is covered in snow throughout the entire year.  From a trailhead at 5,000 ft, the crew climbed to a ledge at 8,300 ft between two glaciers, and camped for the night.  Early the following morning, the group put on crampons and made the climb up the snowfields to the summit with daypacks.  After photos at the summit, the group glissaded down the snow to the camping spot, packed gear, and returned to Camp Parsons.  BSA's Seattle Council provided the mountaineering gear and a guide.  On Wednesday, the group climbed to Marmot Pass in the Olympic Mtns (3,500 ft elevation gain) and camped.  On Thursday, the group departed for a one-night sea kayaking trip.

The younger group did a 5-day sea kayaking trip covering over 50 miles.  They saw lots of seals, eagles and other interesting sights.  After the kayaking, this group did a day hike in the Olympic Mountains.
