About Crew 55
Who we are
Venturing Crew 55 is a co-ed organization for youth between the ages of 14 and 21.
In addition to developing leadership skills, the Crew is focused on outdoor activities, including
camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, sailing, kayaking, canoeing and mountaineering.
Crew 55 usually sponsors at least one high-adventure trip each summer.
While Crew 55 is closely associated with Troop 55, membership is open to any youth that meets the age requirements and who agrees to abide by the oath and rules of the Scouting program. Some members of Crew 55 have been active in other local Troops, and some have not been involving in Scouting at all prior to joining the Crew. In past years, many of the female members of Crew 55 have also been active in Girl Scout units at the same time.
Our sponsoring organization
Crew 55 is sponsored by St. John the Divine, an Episcopal church located at the corner of
Westheimer and River Oaks Blvd in Houston.
The church also sponsors Pack 55 and Troop 55, which are among the largest Packs and Troops in the country.
The church provides meeting rooms but the three Scouting units are financially self-supporting.
Diverse membership
As with Pack 55 and Troop 55, Crew 55 is open to membership from all religious and ethnic backgrounds.
While many participants are also members of the sponsoring church, a clear majority of the
participants in these three Scouting units are not members of St. John the Divine.
In addition to Protestants, the units have significant participation from Catholic and Jewish
families, and, to a lesser extent, participation from other religious groups.
The members of these units also come from a broad range of economic and ethnic backgrounds.
Adult participation
Crew 55 is a youth organization which is run by the youth who are members.
An adult can serve as Crew Advisor, Assistant Crew Advisors or other similar role,
but his/her primary role is as an advisor to the youth leaders.
All adult participants are expected to take BSA's Venturing Leader Specific Training course.
